Yeah, I hear you on the TE-52. That seems to be a pretty common experience with those budget guitars. I also got mine for about $175, and you're spot on about the neck and fretboard – surprisingly good for the price! I agree, it's definitely a bit of a tank, weight-wise.
For a hobbyist, it's a fantastic platform. You can really get a lot of mileage out of it. The pickups are the weak point. I've been thinking about shielding mine too, to see if that helps with the noise. It seems like a worthwhile upgrade. I think it's worth it for the price, despite the needed upgrades.
